Holland, Bird, and Blog

OK, time for some more bite-sized survival!

I hope you all read/enjoyed my review of Percussion Bitter Sweet. (If you don’t have it and are thinking about getting it, please do so through my iTunes links…)

Just some new tidbits for you: If you look on the right sidebar underneath the RSS and email subscription links (subscribe! subscribe!) there’s 2 new links. The 1st is “What I’m Listening To”. If you’re wondering what’s on my iPod, or just aren’t so into Jazz-Based Sampledelic Groove Funk, then you can check this out. The 2nd link goes to a form collecting information for a new Direct Advertising Program. Right now we’re just collecting preliminary info.

But now for JAZZ! Yesterday was Bird’s birthday as I’m sure you all know and I was pleasantly suprised to hear a lot of him on the radio. WBGO (Newark, 88.3 FM) played an old broadcast from the Royal Roost with (of course) Symphony Sid.

Dave Holland is releasing a new Sextet CD on September 23 and get this- NO MALLET PLAYER! It’s gonna be interesting to see what kind of stuff Holland pulls out. “Some of the compositions that I’ve written in the past evolve in my mind a little bit over time. One of the advantages of the sextet is that it’s still a smaller unit than big band or octet, but it also gives you a lot of options in terms of orchestrating and utilizing backgrounds. So I thought that was a good way to fill out these old compositions and expand on them a little bit where something new could happen. And, of course, this group of people brings some new creative ideas to the pieces.” says Holland in a press release.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for more news!
